Solar and battery storage in strata and understanding the opportunity
Solar panels have helped many Australian households reduce their energy costs. But did you know strata communities can benefit too?
With falling installation costs and government support programs available in many states, solar is becoming an increasingly practical option for strata buildings. And it’s not just for freestanding homes.
Shared solar systems allow multiple lots to benefit from a single rooftop installation. Several states have dedicated programs to support this, including Victoria’s Solar for Apartments Program, which provides rebates specifically for strata communities.
In Western Australia, one strata community recently used grant funding to install a 6.6kW solar system with battery storage alongside composting infrastructure, creating a building that generates its own clean energy while reducing household waste. In Victoria, a 12-lot strata complex completed significant enabling works including a 24.7kW shared solar installation and a full building electrical upgrade, positioning it to take the next step toward full electrification of its hot water systems.
What does it take to get started?
A shared solar project in strata typically requires a resolution at a general meeting, usually a special resolution depending on your state. You’ll need to commission an electrical assessment of the building and get quotes from accredited installers.
The good news is that costs have dropped significantly, rebates are available in many states, and the long-term savings on communal electricity costs can be substantial.
Beyond the financial case, a building that generates its own clean energy is a more resilient, more sustainable and more forward-thinking place to live. It reduces the building’s environmental footprint, lowers operating costs, and demonstrates the kind of collective action that makes strata communities genuinely powerful.
