Getting your strata community involved in a sustainability project
The best sustainability initiatives in strata aren’t just environmentally impactful. They’re community-building. They give residents a reason to work together toward something meaningful and create a shared sense of pride in the building they all call home.
But getting a project off the ground can feel confronting. How do you get people interested? How do you get it approved? How do you make it last?
Here’s a simple roadmap.
Start with an idea and gauge interest. Talk to your neighbours, after all, strata is all about community. Raise it at a committee meeting or post a note in the common area. The best ideas are often the simplest, a community garden, a composting system, a shared clothes line, a native garden bed.
Do your research. What will it cost? What funding might be available? Is there a grant you could apply for? The CHU Green Grant is one option, and there are state government and council programs as well.
Bring a proposal to the Owners Corporation. Any initiative involving common property needs formal approval. A simple written proposal covering the idea, the cost, the benefits and how it will be maintained is usually enough to get the conversation started.
Start small and build. You don’t need to transform the whole building at once. A single successful project builds confidence, trust and momentum for the next one.
The communities that do this well are the ones where residents feel genuinely connected to each other and to their building. When people care about where they live, they look after it better. And that benefits everyone, owners, tenants and the broader neighbourhood alike.
