Green grants and sustainability funding and what’s available for your strata community

One of the biggest barriers to sustainability improvements in strata isn’t a lack of good ideas. It’s the question of how to pay for them. The good news is that there’s more funding available than most owners realise.

The CHU Green Grant

CHU’s Green Grant program supports strata communities across Australia to undertake practical sustainability initiatives, from community gardens and solar installations to water conservation projects and native gardens. In 2025/26, the program offered a pool of up to $50,000 in grants.

To be eligible, your initiative needs to address at least one of the following:

  • Environmental sustainability, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction or water conservation
  • Social impact, such as community wellbeing, accessibility or safety

State and territory government programs

Most states offer rebates or incentives for energy efficiency upgrades. It’s worth checking what’s available in your state before assuming a project is out of reach.

Local councils

Many councils offer free or subsidised composting equipment, native plants and support for urban greening projects.

How do you apply?

Most programs require a brief written proposal outlining the initiative, the expected benefits and how the funding will be used. The key is to start — even a small grant can grow into something significant.

Strata communities that pursue sustainability funding aren’t just improving their buildings. They’re building the kind of community other residents want to be part of.
