The Forktree Project - CHU and Holdfast Insurance Brokers
The CHU Underwriting Agencies Pty Ltd South Australia team and clients from Holdfast Insurance Brokers gathered at The Forktree Project site in the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula for a day dedicated to environmental conservation.
The Forktree Project focuses on restoring native habitats by planting indigenous species to reduce carbon emissions and enhance local wildlife habitats. Tim Jarvis AM and Liz Blumer, welcomed us with an insightful talk about the project's critical importance. They highlighted how extensive development and farming have significantly reduced native habitats.
Originally, we planned to plant trees, but the harsh reality of Adelaide's dry weather had made the ground too firm and dry for planting. Instead, our team tackled various essential tasks including:
- Pulling out last year's stakes and tree covers for reuse—retrieving as many as we could of the 6,000 in place on rough terrain.
- Scraping unwanted liverwort from around plants in the nursery, a tedious but cathartic process.
- Clearing tracks of invasive weeds like thistles and Salvation Jane.
We also got a sneak preview of the upcoming Forktree Education Centre, currently under construction. This centre will host school children for volunteering and environmental learning, fostering a new generation of environmentalists and instilling conservation values from a young age.
The day wasn't just about hard work; it was also about camaraderie and collective effort towards an important cause. Working in the elements on challenging terrain took us out of our comfort zones, but the team's spirits remained high, and the experience was deeply rewarding.
